I had asked this question before in the duck dog thread and didn't get an answer.

Could you hunt ducks with a vizsla? pronounced (veesh-la) they are good hunting dogs, pointers. does anyone know if one could teach them to retrieve? could they handle the cold with such a short and no undercoat>

I have never seen one in a marsh, typically a upland game bird dog. Don't know if they could take the cold and wet conditions.

Sometimes its hard enough on dogs that are bred for the extreme cold/wet conditions. i.e. chessies and labs. I wouldnt want to spend alot of time training a dog to retrieve just to find out it is only a fair weather waterfowler. I am sure the vizsla is more than intelligent enough to learn to retrieve with proper training.

me and a girlfriend had weim's & there just like the vee's and some club they were in the dogs had to be trained for everything from water to feild to tracking. i would say yes . but like everyone else said i think it would depend on the climate ur in. i know a guy that uses a german shorthair for ducks.

I knew that they were pretty much used as pointers and i had a hunch that i could train one to retrieve. lately i've been hunting in northern PA and i was throwing around the idea of wether or not they could deal with how cold it gets up here. it ain't too bad, the worst it usually gets is a few degrees under zero.

i don't have any problems with a lab, i was just wondering about the vizsla

I have seen them working for ducks out in California, but that was in flooded rice fields. The water temp in the dead of winter was warm to me. Take the same dog and bring it out here and I would venture to say a Viszla would be frozen to the Bone in short order once wet.

I also had a chance to hunt quail over them in Texas last year. Hard working dogs that worked covey after covey.
