Personally I think all calls are good on water. IMO tune the call to what works best for ya.
Good luck!

Personally....I like a wood call for over water. The calls stays softer, gives you a more mellow tone, and still allows you work birds in the distance if necessary. My go to over water this year will be an HPH in all flamed hedge, a change from last year (SMH in flamed hedge). My go to field call will be a MAX-4 Acrylic SMH.
You want a more mellow and soft tone for hunting over water...cut down on your echo and work the birds with soft clucks, moans, and moan/cluck combos.
Just my experience...other may see things different.

i use my wood calls for over water. i will use the comp insert if needed to get the attention of the geese, but my experiences seem to me that geese respond better to softer calling.

I agree that wood calls probably sound best over water, but I do use my Acryllic SMH and Meat Cutter flute alot over water as well, with good success.

Thanks for the responses, I mainly use meatcutter over water now, but I just ordered wood HPH. Just adding another Foiles call to the collection, wanted to get an HPH so now I just have to sit back and wait.

I like to start out loud at long distances over water with acrylic and change to wood once they are under 100 yards. That soft low mellow goose that comes out of a wood call is what you need to seal the deal over water.

I WOULD RECOMEND A LOW TONED HONKER TO GET A RASPY SOUND.SO THE SOUND DOESNT ECO OVEER THE WATER.

depends what kinda water your talkin about, true a small lake or bay or pond surrounded by woods or partly surrounded by woods the mellow call will be most effictive, but if im on a pothole in the middle of the prarie or on a big lake in the cattails i want some volume.

I'm talking smaller lakes and rivers.
