Hey everyone,
I am just getting into the duck and goose hunting area of hunting. My buddies that duck and goose hunt tell me that Foiles calls are the way to go! I am an avid hunter and fisherman of the whole WI area. I do fairly well with my diaphragm turkey calls.

My question; I am going to be hunting ducks (mainly mallards) and canadian geese. I have only blown a duck call probably three times in my life, so I am no veteran to the calls. I was wondering what you guys would think that a good starter call would be for ducks and a separate one for geese? I would like something that is relatively easy to start with, and something i could maybe "grow" into.

Dead Meat Mallard for ducks

Straight Meat Honker for geese

Great calls, easy to learn on. Call Foiles and have him help you out.

I am going to play the smart ass and say it is Canada Geese.

Bay Country Calls Shore Thing. Quite possibly the easiest operating goose call on the market. Sounds great to boot.

Any duck call made by RNT would suffice.

The Foiles High Plains Honker in a very easy and great sounding call. And for a duck call the BGB Death Whistle

i'm gonna play the old Strait Meat Honker card for goose call....it is a super easy call to learn on and it will do anything you can make it do

as for duck call...the Dead Meat Mallard gets my vote....its a tweener call meaning it will get soft for the timber hunts, but you can open it up and get loud on an open water hunt

You may also want to consider a BGB Fat Boy goose call. It's similar to the strait meat honker but, not every kid on the block has one. The BGB Smoke N Double is an easy blowing duck call. You can check them out on the online catalog. You can pm me if you have any questions. Jack

BGB DW wood
SMH or BGB Fat Boy

Can't go wrong for first calls. Then you can start collecting once you become proficient.

The Zink power hen is super easy to blow and control and the Strait Meat Honker is a must for your lanyard. most of all brands of acrylics are good calls, but more importantly it is the operator and how the call is tuned

I would say start slow and see what you like since you are just getting into the sport. If you can, get out to a store that will let you try out calls and see whats fit you and your calling style. If you look in the yard sale there are some great deals on calls. If I would recomend any calls it would be the following:

around $50:
Duck-Big guys best death whistle-$50.00(new)
Goose-Meatgrinder-$40.00(new)

around $100
Duck-Used DMM or a TR-$80-$100
Goose-Used SMH or HPH-$80-110

As far as your question about an easy starter call for ducks I would say that the BGB death whistle is a great call to start with.It has a great mellow sound, it doesn't take much air to operate, and it is very forgiving being set up as a double reed. As far as a stater goose call, I would say try and buy a new or used SMH.It is by far the easiest call to learn on.It take no back pressure and it works great in the field and the stage. It is a call that you can "grow" into for year to come. Thanks and it If you need more help send me a PM and would be glad to help you out
